Nanaimo school board trustees are writing a letter to the provincial government criticizing the plan to provide money to parents for daycare or tutoring assistance if a settlement is not reached in the teachers' strike by the time school opens next month.
The board held a special meeting on Thursday to discuss the government’s plan. Trustees said that while they recognize that a prolonged strike creates financial hardship and inconvenience for many families, the offer of $40 a day to parents is impractical and will create inequities.
The board says that any savings from the strike should go back into the public education system.
