New retail building could be coming to Nanaimo’s north end soon.

A development permit has been submitted to the City of Nanaimo for a 1,672-square metre commercial building at Nanaimo North Town Centre.

The single-story building would be constructed at the corner of Oliver Road and Uplands Drive in the mall’s parking lot.

Tamera Rogers, Nanaimo city planner, said there is a tenant but wouldn’t elaborate on who it because nothing had been confirmed.

“It’s a stand-alone commercial retail space,” she said. “It is right now intended for one tenant.”

Rogers said the building will be near the Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire. She said improvements will be made to the Oliver Road and Uplands Drive intersection.

“There is going to be a bit of a pedestrian plaza with a ramp that will lead into the mall site,” she said.

Last year, the centre saw the addition of Lowes Home Improvement and Dollarama, with the latter opening in late November.

No time frame on construction has been announced. Representatives from Nanaimo North Town Centre refused to comment.
