Nanaimo sex trade worker assaulted, robbed

Man arrested after robbing and assaulting sex trade worker in Nanaimo at knifepoint.

Nanaimo Mounties arrested a man for allegedly robbing and sexually assaulting a female sex trade worker at knifepoint.

Police responded at about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday when a woman called saying she was robbed and sexually assaulted by a man with a knife on Shoreline Drive in south Nanaimo.

The victim, 28, was able to provide a detailed description of her assailant.

Police contained the area and brought in a police dog team to track the suspect.

Const. Clayton Wurzinger and police dog Boomer tracked the suspect to where he was hiding under some debris not far from where the attack took place. Police also found the weapon allegedly used in the attack.

Paramedics treated the woman for minor cuts and bruises sustained trying to flee her assailant, but she did not require hospitalization.

Nanaimo Victim Services is supporting the victim and police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Michael Ryan Harris, 33, of no fixed address, was arrested without incident for robbery and sexual assault and held in custody at Nanaimo RCMP detachment until he appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Thursday.
