Nanaimo school trustees abandon plan for international baccalaureate program

NANAIMO – Trustees cite lack of space for program in Fairview Elementary School.

An international baccalaureate program will no longer be part of the discussion as Nanaimo school district works toward finalizing its 2017-18 budget.

The district business committee recommended a staff report detailing costs associated with offering the international education program for kindergarten to Grade 12, but the school board voted against it at its Wednesday board meeting. Fairview Elementary School had been suggested as a possible location for the program.

Jeff Solomon was among trustees voting against, citing a number of reasons, including that there would be little or no room for out of catchment students to attend Fairview.

Trustee Scott Kimler spoke in favour, saying the “spirit of the motion is to gather more information” about the program so the board could make an informed decision.

Kimler, Stephanie Higginson and Tania Brzovic voted for, while Solomon, Bill Robinson, Natasha Bob, Noah Routley and Steve Rae voted against. Jamie Brennan was absent.

A motion related to providing money for a program application fee was also defeated.
