The song will remain the same for Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district as its superintendent and CEO is getting a four-year contract renewal.

Scott Saywell will be under contract until July 1, 2025, announced Charlene McKay, Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools’ board chairperson, at the district’s business committee meeting on Wednesday. Among Saywell’s efforts, according to McKay, are commitment to the district’s reconciliation framework and “positive working relationships and regular conversations with partner groups,” including education support workers’ and teachers’ unions and the district parent advisory council.

Saywell said it is a “tremendous honour” to continue to lead the district and working with school trustees and the senior management team has been “rewarding work.”

“I’m very proud of the direction this district is taking at becoming a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainability, ensuring safe and caring, healthy learning and working environments, inclusive of the diversity of our entire learning community,” Saywell said.

Also known as the ‘singing superintendent,’ Saywell has been featured in a number of social media videos that see him playing the guitar and singing out school announcements.

Saywell, formerly district assistant superintendent, has been Nanaimo-Ladysmith’s top school administrator since August 2018, when he succeeded John Blain, who retired.

Terms of the superintendent’s new contract aren’t available, but the district does release statements of financial information containing salaries annually. According to the statement for the year ending last June 30, Saywell received $213,590 in total remuneration in 2019/20.
