Nanaimo school district will have more than $2.5 million in annual facilities grant money with which to maintain its facilities during the 2016-17 school year.
As required by the B.C. Ministry of Education to access the money, the school board gave approval to a capital projects bylaw at its May 25 meeting.
The most expensive of the projects, expected to be completed by March 31, are roof replacement for Forest Park and North Oyster elementary schools, with respective price tags of $496,265 and $263,971.
There is also $351,953 allocated for lighting efficiency upgrades at 16 schools, including Departure Bay Elementary, Nanaimo District Secondary and Mount Benson school, which is slated to house the amalgamated Learn at Home program in September.
Overall, the province granted more than $2.7 million to the school district, but $47,298 must be set aside for the Capital Asset Management System, which is money for school buildings and structural improvements shared by the province and education boards.
Another $94,595 must be allocated for the province's Next Generation Network Internet service upgrades for schools.
Work on wireless network access will be done at four Nanaimo schools, the gym at the Harewood school site and school district office at a cost of $6,600 each.
In total, the ministry granted close to $114.5 million to school districts across the province.
