The City of Nanaimo, District of Lantzville and Regional District of Nanaimo have been allotted their share of $1 billion of one-time money from the B.C. government.

In a press release, the province announced that Nanaimo will receive more then $16 million, the RDN close to $8 million and Lantzville close to $2 million from the growing communities fund. The money is to be spent on such items as infrastructure, roads, transit, water and electrical systems, community centres, parks and social services.

Sheila Malcolmson, Nanaimo MLA, said she is pleased about the dollar figure.

“Investing in people, services and infrastructure is good for everyone,” Malcolmson said in the press release. “That is why our government is funding Nanaimo as it grows and supporting our city’s local priorities.”

Her sentiments were shared by colleagues Doug Routley (Nanaimo-North Cowichan MLA) and Adam Walker (Parksville-Qualicum MLA).

“People in our region count on the services that local governments provide,” said Routley in the release. “That is why we are committed to working with communities and helping improve infrastructure and amenities for people.”
