Nanaimo RCMP investigating suspicious car fire in hospital area

Investigators believe vehicle on Thunderbird Drive was set alight with accelerant

Police and fire investigators are probing a suspicious car fire that happened over the weekend.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to the blaze at about 11 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Thunderbird Drive.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, the fire cause significant damage to the rear exterior of a 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer and fire investigators believe it was intentionally set with an unknown accelerant.

Police made inquiries around the neighbourhood and learned that a vehicle had been heard racing up and down the street and squealing its tires earlier in the evening, but no description was obtained for that vehicle or its driver and it’s unknown if that car or its occupants are related to the fire.
