Nanaimo officially listed as potential incinerator site

NANAIMO – Metro Vancouver announced four sites that have been proposed by shortlisted proponents, including Nanaimo.

Nanaimo is on the list as a potential site for Metro Vancouver’s waste-to-energy garbage incinerator.

Metro Vancouver has announced four sites proposed by proponents for a waste-to-energy incinerator. Nanaimo made the list, along with Port Mellon, Delta and Vancouver.

According to a press release, nine shortlisted candidates were required to identify property they’ve secured for their exclusive use by Nov. 21. None of the sites have been vetted for feasibility by the regional district.

Another six sites are also anticipated to be announced as part of a different request for proposal process, which allowed public and private landowners to submit sites that would be available to all shortlisted proponents. The sites have not yet been released for legal and financial reasons.

Wheelabrator and Urbaser proposed Nanaimo’s Duke Point on property at 650, 850 and 870 Jackson Road. Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Committee will now start community consultations.
