Nanaimo Mounties suspect broken windows result of BB gun or slingshot

NANAIMO – Incidents occur at night to random, parked cars.

Someone in Nanaimo is taking aim at vehicle windows with a pellet gun, BB gun or slingshot.

Since the beginning of summer more than 30 vehicles have been damaged by projectiles. At least 10 of those vehicles were hit since mid-September.

“In the last week or two weeks we’ve had the windows shot out of cars with a pellet gun or BB gun,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

Police aren’t sure what weapon is being used, but at one scene investigators found a small steel ball bearing suggesting it might have come from a slingshot, at least in that instance.

Most of the damage has occurred in Nanaimo’s Uplands and Hammond Bay areas. The incidents happen late at night and the vehicles appear to be randomly targeted parked cars. There have been no reports of thefts from the vehicles.

Anyone with information about these incidents or the person involved is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com.
