A Nanaimo RCMP member is taking a few days off after taking a punch to the jaw at a domestic dispute on the weekend.
The assault happened shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday at a home on Athena Place where an intoxicated man had allegedly assaulted his father. When police arrived, the suspect approached them and without provocation punched one officer in the face.
The two members subdued the man and found a small bag of marijuana in one of his pockets.
Stephen Kieran Robb, 18, was charged with two counts of assault, obstructing a police officer and possession of a controlled substance. He was held in custody over the weekend and appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Monday.
Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the officer who was struck was treated in hospital and released. He will see a specialist for a more detailed assessment of his injury.
Meanwhile, a female officer who was attacked in downtown Nanaimo in May is back on the job.
She suffered multiple injuries when she was sent to help Jason Joseph Speare, 39, May 12, after he called police saying he was assaulted.
Speare turned on the officer and punched her repeatedly in the head, face and stomach and tried to take her gun before a casino security guard intervened to help subdue Speare.
O'Brien said the constable was away from work for several shifts and took additional personal time off before returning to work. She is now back on full duties.
Speare is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday (June 28).
