Nanaimo man dies in crossbow shooting

NANAIMO – Nanaimo man dead and Maple Ridge man in hospital following weekend crossbow attack in Mission.

A 59-year-old Nanaimo man has died from self-inflicted wounds after allegedly shooting a 23-year-old Mission man with a crossbow.

The incident happened shortly before midnight Friday when Mission RCMP were called about a man who had been shot with a crossbow and was being treated at Mission Memorial Hospital.

The victim was struck once with a bolt, which injured his right arm and side of his torso.

The victim, who was expected to survive the attack, was shot in a parking lot in the 7200 block of Horne Street at the Mission Station Grill where investigators found a 59-year-old man with a crossbow unconscious and suffering from severe injuries.

He was also transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead several hours later.

Police said it appears from the initial investigation that the deceased male was involved in this incident and died from self-inflicted wounds.

Police said the suspect, a man from Nanaimo and the victim, a Maple Ridge resident, were known to each other and that the shooting did not appear to be gang or drug related.
