Nanaimo man dies in crash near Courtenay

NANAIMO – Man dies from injuries sustained in Island Highway crash near Mount Washington Parkway turnoff.

A Nanaimo man died in a motor vehicle accident near Courtenay last week.

The collision happened Wednesay morning on a stretch of the Island Highway near the Mount Washington Parkway turnoff when a northbound full-size panel van, being driven about 110 km/h, hit an Emcon support truck following a street sweeper travelling about five to 10 km/h.

The high speed impact trapped the van’s driver in his vehicle. He was airlifted to hospital in Victoria, but died of his injuries that night, said Const. Don Sinclair, Comox Valley RCMP spokesman.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by RCMP North Island Traffic Services and the B.C. Coroners Service.

The victim’s name and age have not been released.

The driver of the Emcon truck was also injured and transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox for treatment.
