An elderly man died after his scooter and a car collided Wednesday afternoon.

A 78-year-old Nanaimo man died after he was hit by a car Wednesday.

The victim was driving his electric mobility scooter on Old Victoria Road near Bowlsby Road when he was struck by a southbound Chevy Cavalier at about 2:15 p.m.

Witnesses told police the man was driving his scooter northbound and then tried to cross the road when he was hit by the car driven by a 19-year-old woman.

Police said the victim was not crossing on a crosswalk or an intersection when he was hit.

Police closed a section of the 900 block of Old Victoria Road for several hours and rerouted traffic to allow Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Services and Island District collision analysts to carry out their investigation of the crash scene.

Police have not yet determined what charges, if any, might be pending against the driver of the car.
