Nanaimo man arrested in coast to coast drug op

Year-long investigation into coast to coast trafficking operation results in arrest of Nanaimo man.

A Nanaimo man was arrested on drug charges stemming from a marijuana  trafficking ring with ties to Nanaimo and Newfoundland.

The St. John’s Newfoundland RCMP Federal Drug Section and the Nanaimo RCMP Property Crime Unit carried out a search warrant on a business in the 2200 block of McGarrigle Road Wednesday at about 8:30 p.m.

Fernando Cui Galan, 46, was arrested for alleged conspiracy to traffic, trafficking in a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

The search warrant and arrest was the result of a 12-month investigation into a multi-kilogram drug trafficking ring.

The St. John’s RCMP was monitoring large shipments of marijuana concealed in machinery parts and transported from Nanaimo.

Galan was held in custody at Naniamo RCMP detachment until members of the St. John’s drug unit took him to Newfoundland Friday. He will remain in custody while awaiting trial in provincial court in Newfoundland.

The investigation is ongoing and further charges could be forthcoming, police said.
