Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Sheila Malcolmson sent tweets to 30 members of the Liberal caucus on Monday asking for them to unblock her private member’s bill.

A day ahead of a secret ballot vote to save her proposed abandoned vessels legislation, Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Sheila Malcolmson took to Twitter to individually call out members of the Liberal caucus to unblock her bill.

The first tweet was sent to Liberal MP for Sydney-Victoria Mark Eyking shortly before 11 a.m. asking: “will you vote to #unblock my abandonedvessels legislation C352? Do not let years of advice from coastal communities go unheard in the #HoC.”

Over the next two hours, Malcolmson fired off identical tweets to 30 Liberal caucus members, while reminding others such as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Transport Minister Marc Garneau of their support for former MP Jean Crowder’s Bill C-638 on abandoned vessels.

None of the Liberal MPs responded on social media to the messages.

A House of Commons procedural committee recently deemed Malcolmson’s Bill C-352 “non-votable” after it was found to be too similar to legislation tabled by the Liberal government in late October.

Malcolmson was successful in her appeal to the House speaker last week and all 338 members of parliament will have the opportunity to vote Tuesday and Wednesday on whether the proposed bill should be debated and voted on Dec. 6.
