Nanaimo’s only cold weather homeless shelter is staying open a little bit longer this year.
The First Unitarian Church’s cold weather homeless shelter will remain open until April 14, instead of March 31.
Kevan Griffith said this year’s colder and rainier weather combined with fiscal management and influx of donations has enabled the shelter to extend its operating days by two weeks.
The shelter, which operates daily from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m., is still seeing a high number of guests each night.
“We’re still running at about 90 per cent capacity,” Griffith said. “That’s just with the 30 beds we have.”
