Firefighters are trying to extinguish a bush fire near Nanaimo’s tourist information centre.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews are on scene near Northfield Road and the Nanaimo Parkway, and East Wellington Fire Department is fighting the fire from Maxey Road.

“We have it under control, but we’re just mopping up right now and with the bush fires, because of the very dry weather we’ve had and the dry vegetation, we’re going to be on scene for quite awhile mopping up…” said Greg Norman, deputy chief with Nanaimo Fire Rescue. “We have to be vigilant on the mop up and the fire that’s underneath the ground.”

He said Nanaimo Fire Rescue is on scene with two crews and has requested on-call firefighters for support.

Norman said there is no indication as to a cause of the fire.
