Nanaimo firefighters put out campfire

NANAIMO – Fire suspected of being set by group of squatters in the area.

A group of squatters are believed to be responsible for a small brush fire below a railway right of way on Haliburton Street Tuesday.

Firefighters were called shortly after noon to put out a low, smouldering fire, according to inspector Rick Kwasnecha.

“It looked like they had a campfire going the night before that spread to the bush,” he said.

The fire’s location was difficult to get to and firefighters were on scene for a long period of time extinguishing hot spots, Kwasnecha said.
