Nanaimo finalist for TV broadcast

Resident entered city into Global TV contest to help promote tourism

Winona Adams loves her city and she wants others to love it, too.

So she entered a contest to get the morning crew on Global TV News to broadcast from Nanaimo. She recently found out the city is a finalist, along with Campbell River, Squamish and Princeton.

“I love living in this city,” said Adams, who transferred to Nanaimo more than 30 years ago as part of her work with the federal government. “I thought, why not sell it?”

She cited Nanaimo residents’ friendliness, plus the plethora of parks and wildlife in her nomination form. She said she hoped to help promote tourism by showing that Nanaimo has grown from its roots as a roughneck, industrial town.

“They think of the old Nanaimo,” Adams said. “You have to come here now.”

Voting for the winner began Monday (May 28), with the top community receiving a breakfast sponsored by Save-On-Foods, from which the Morning News team will broadcast on June 24.

Adams would also win $1,300 in groceries from Save-On-Foods, which she plans to donate to the food bank.

“I’m blessed, so I need to pass it on,” she said.
