Nanaimo Dry Grad needs volunteers with event coming up this month

June 22 event offers alcohol-free graduation festivities and about 250 volunteers are needed

Nanaimo Dry Grad 2018 organizers are hoping to have enough volunteers in place with the event just three weeks away.

Dry grad, which will be held June 22 at the recreation complex at Beban Park, offers festivities for graduating high school students in an alcohol- and drug-free setting. Jason Bradley, Nanaimo Dry Grad Society chairman, said there are currently fewer than 50 volunteers signed up and organizers seek at least 300 volunteers. The trend is people tend to sign up at the last minute, Bradley said.

Two shifts are available for dry grad, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 or 2:30 a.m.

“There’s a million different jobs from kitchen to door checking, to security, whatever you want to do, look at our website, e-mail the e-mail address, volunteer@nanaimodrygrad.com,” said Bradley.

There will be numerous events for grads to enjoy, he said.

“In the social centre, you have a DJ, there are some comedians coming this year, we have a spa room, Starbucks has a coffee shop in here,” said Bradley. “You get into [Frank Crane Arena] where you have American Gladiator-style games …The pool’s open, there’s scuba diving. There’s a nail studio in there. You get outside there’s beach volleyball. The rink’s open at Cliff McNabb for skating, there’s rock climbing. You get into the Centennial Building, and you’re going to get laser tag. There’s sumo wrestling in there and some jousting, just tons of events.”

There is a $65 fee for entry for students, with a June 18 deadline to sign up.

Bradley said about 850 students attended the 2017 event.

Doors open at 7 p.m. June 22 and dry grad will run until about 2:30 a.m.
