Nanaimo drafts new dog bylaw

NANAIMO – City council asks for bylaw to include enforcement action for dogs left in hot vehicles.

Bylaw officers could soon have a new enforcement tool to deal with dogs in distress.

City officials are drafting dog control regulations to clamp down on people who leave dogs in hot cars. The bylaw will also address dog tethering.

Coun. Ian Thorpe called it a really good idea and sees it tied to education for dog owners. But he also said that there should be a consequence for those who don’t take care of their dogs properly to the point of endangerment.

The decision on the bylaw was unanimous despite a staff recommendation not to expand the Animal Control Bylaw to include tethering and dogs in hot cars. A staff report said the changes would have limited success and is anticipated to increase service requirements beyond the current animal control contract.
