Nanaimo cop doesn't buy sandwich explanation for impaired driving

NANAIMO – RCMP says it's one of the more creative excuses they've heard.

Sandwiches are not on the menu when it comes to making excuses for impaired driving in Nanaimo.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, Cpl. Norm Smith heard an unusual explanation from a suspected impaired driver last week.

Just after 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 25, Smith, who was following up on a complaint of a possible impaired driver, stopped a vehicle asked the woman driving it if she had been drinking.

She allegedly responded by saying she had not consumed alcohol for two months and then suggested it must be due to the sandwich she was eating.

Without missing a beat, Smith asked, "Well, how much did the sandwich have to drink?" which also brought an end to the conversation.

Smith then asked the woman to provide a breath sample, to which allegedly registered a "Fail" reading.

Her vehicle was impounded for 30 days and she received a 90-day driving prohibition.

"This example is not intended to make light of impaired driving, which kills or injures hundreds of people every year. It was, though, one of the more creative excuses ever provided," said Constable Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
