An earthquake devastated areas of Syria and Turkey this month and people in Nanaimo are trying to help.
Two community events are being planned for Sunday, Feb. 12, to help those affected by the earthquake in Syria.
“The people of northwest Syria are in desperate need of aid after a devastating earthquake left thousands dead, injured and in need of humanitarian aid. They are in need of basic necessities like food, water, clothing, blankets, etc.,” noted a press release for one of the community events.
There will be a relief market set up at the Islamic Centre of Nanaimo, 897 Harbour View St., on Sunday from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Hand-crafted items and different types of Syrian foods will be sold.
At a separate community event, volunteers will be preparing Syrian take-out meals of chicken shawarma, rice, hummus, salad and a drink for $20. The meals will be available from 12:30 p.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday at a private home at 555 Weber St. Organizer Mohamad Tarab said all money raised will be used to purchase necessities which will be distributed directly to people in need.
