Nanaimo Chess Club players are always trying to stay one move ahead of the competition.

The club is back meeting twice a week after a long pandemic postponement.

“Local enthusiasts suffered through the pandemic just like many other game players, but at least they had online competition,” noted a press release from the club. “But live play is what many players thrive on.”

The club meets Wednesdays starting at 4 p.m. at the MGM Restaurant and Mondays at 6 p.m. at the Kin Hut at Departure Bay Beach.

Longtime chess enthusiast Glen Beaudin said in the release that he had a lot of people wanting to talk chess during the pandemic due to the popularity of The Queen’s Gambit series on Netflix. He said some viewers regarded the series as depicting a ‘battle of the sexes’ but he disagreed.

“It was about how any person, regardless of any situation, is welcome into the live chess world. It is only about the game. The multiple-award-winning series completely respects that.”

The Monday meetings have a $6 drop-in fee, while the more informal Wednesday get-togethers have no drop-in fee but tipping restaurant staff is encouraged.
