A non-profit animal rescue is notifying Nanaimo residents that “kitten season” is underway, and it hopes to educate community members on the ongoing issue of abandoned and feral cats in the area.

CatNap, a Nanaimo-based non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned and feral cats, hopes to get the word out about the growing feral cat problem in the area.

Candis Reber, CatNap’s rescue and trapping director said in a news release that kitten season has been ongoing for at least a month, and often extends into fall.

“If these kittens are not rescued, some of them may not survive, but many of them will grow up to be feral and start having their own kittens, compounding the problem,” she said.

Partnered with Nanaimo Animal Control and the SPCA, CatNap’s primary responsibility is to trap feral cats and kittens, have them spayed and neutered and find good homes for them.

The news release said the organization recently reached a milestone by completing work on what they called the “orange colony,” where after two years of work, Pierre, the last un-neutered cat from a colony of 86, was trapped on private property.

Volunteer-led CatNap works with local pet stores to make rescued cats available for adoption, or if the cat is not suited for indoor life, they will be spayed or neutered and returned to their colony.
