Mysterious big bang shakes Harewood

NANAIMO – Emergency services have no idea what caused loud bang that shook Harewood homes.

Twitter was abuzz with tweets from people reacting to a mysterious loud boom that shook homes in Harewood late Monday.

South Nanaimo residents started chatting about the noise that shook homes over a wide area at 11:15 p.m.

"The only call to our dispatch came in from Poets Trail Drive – that's near the corner of Second Street and Wakesiah – loud explosion, shook the house, power did not go out," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

O'Brien said he saw multiple tweets originating from the Old City Quarter and across Harewood.

"Actually one of our dispatchers lives at Fourth and Bruce and her house shook it was so loud," O'Brien said.

Karen Lindsay, Nanaimo Emergency Program manager also confirmed that, as of Tuesday morning, there had been no reports of damage, fire, injuries or any indication of possible source for the noise.
