Students and staff at Dover Bay Secondary School are taking advantage of more classroom space as a $3-million expansion project is complete.

Four new classrooms were added to the high school in Nanaimo’s north end and in a press release, the B.C. Ministry of Education said students also have access to a new learning hub, fitness centre and gender-neutral washrooms, which utilized existing but under-used space.

The school district contributed $400,000 and in the press release, Greg Keller, Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools’ board chairperson, said SD68 appreciated the money from the province, as the new spaces will enhance learning.

“With the completion of the addition, Dover Bay Secondary is now better-equipped to support our increased enrolment with more classrooms and additional flex space and provide improved inclusivity and accessibility through updated washroom facilities,” he said.

The ministry contributed $2.6 million and suggested the expansion will help the community keep up with enrolment growth.

“Now, more students in Nanaimo are learning in modern classrooms and are better connected to their schools,” said Rachna Singh, B.C. education minister, in the press release.

Adam Walker, Parksville-Qualicum MLA, expressed excitement about the new classrooms.

“We know schools are the heart of communities and as more families continue to make Nanaimo their home, this addition will ensure students have the space they need to learn and grow,” he said.

The province also recently directed $35 million to the district for projects such as seismic upgrades at Cilaire and Pleasant Valley elementary schools and a 12-classroom expansion at École Hammond Bay Elementary.
