Following an announcement from the Ministry of Education Tuesday, Nanaimo school district will save $593,079 this year.
In a press release, the ministry said B.C. school districts will not have to pay their share of provincial charges this year. Districts have made a concerted effort to cut spending on administration and because of that, it is possible for that money to go back to students, it said.
John Blain, Nanaimo school district superintendent, said the board will decide how to spend the “one-time money” next school year.
“The limitations are that when it's one-time money ... it's not going to be an annual thing. We have to be cautious around salaries and programs that we put in place that cost us money in the future at the same time, so we want create something that we can create effiicencies and also to work with students,” Blain said.
In all, the ministry said there was $25 million in savings across the province.
