Mayor requests meeting with province over Colliery dams

CDPPS, city still not in agreement about next steps for the Colliery dams.

Nanaimo’s mayor has called for a meeting with B.C. Natural Resources minister Steve Thomson on the Colliery dams, as stakeholders remain deadlocked over next steps.

City officials and the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society remain at an impasse over next steps following a consultation meeting Monday.

Jeff Solomon, spokesman for the CDPPS, wants time and discussion about the dams as called for in a previous council motion but the province has given the city a March 27 deadline to hand in a revised remediation plan for the dams and no further stakeholder consultation has been scheduled.

Mayor Bill McKay said he's called for a meeting with Thomson to determine options and a way around “our current turmoil.”
