Local restaurant owners are bringing their competitive instincts to the table for Nanaimo’s second annual BorschFest event.

The event, akin to a chili cook-off but with Ukrainian beet soup, is a fundraiser for the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel and happens in the church’s parish hall at 4017 Victoria Ave. Sunday (Jan. 29) noon to 3 p.m.

This year’s event has drawn recipes from several popular local restaurants, including Firehouse Grill, New York Style Pizza and Pasta, Sandwich House, 2 Chefs Affair - last year’s winner returning to defend the title - Modern Café and Coco Café, that the public will pass judgement on which eatery whipped up the most savoury soup.
