Man stabbed on path in north Nanaimo after suspect allegedly took backpack

Police are searching for a suspect after a Nanaimo man suffered a non-life threatening stab wound when he was robbed on the weekend.

The robbery happened at about 11 a.m. Sunday in north Nanaimo. According to police, the victim, who is in his mid-40s, told investigators he was walking along a pathway behind Chapters near Mary Ellen Drive, when a man approached him from the opposite direction.

The victim felt a pull on his backpack as the suspect passed by. When the victim tried to prevent the suspect from taking his pack, he was stabbed with what police describe as an unknown edged weapon.

The suspect managed to run off with the victim’s backpack and jacket.

Nanaimo RCMP and a police services dog searched the area, but failed to track down the suspect, who is described as First Nation, in his early 30s, 5-foot-6 with short, spiked black hair, and wearing a blue hoodie, green sunglasses and jeans.

The victim was treated at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and released.
