A man is dead after an incident took place in the 1400-block of Hillside Avenue Saturday.

Officers responded to a disturbance call sometime during the morning of March 10. Police were on scene combing the property near Hillside Mall in Victoria well into Saturday evening and have cordoned off the address with police tape.

Witnesses on scene Saturday afternoon told Victoria News a man was stabbed.

According to Victoria Police Const. Matt Rutherford, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit was called to the scene. With the assistance of the Victoria Police Forensic Identification Section and the BC Coroners Service, the major crime unit continues to lead the investigation.

Hilary Marks, who lives nearby, said she knows the victim, who she believes was killed in a drug-related dispute.

“He was a lovely kid and he didn’t deserve to die this way, absolutely not,” Marks said. “We need more love and compassion in this world.”

RCMP are asking anyone who may have been in the area between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. March 10 to call the VIIMCU line at 250-380-6211. You can also report what you know anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
