Man dies in single-vehicle crash on Yellow Point Road

NANAIMO – Two children in vehicle unhurt in accident.

A 52-year-old man has died in a single vehicle crash in Yellow Point south of Nanaimo.

The accident occurred Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m. on the 2600 block of Yellow Point Road when residents in the area called 911 saying a southbound vehicle drove off the road and struck a B.C. Hydro pole and a tree, according to a Nanaimo RCMP press release.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two children, age 6 and 8, also in the vehicle, did not sustain significant injuries, police said, but were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for examination and later released.

RCMP from Nanaimo and Ladysmith attended the crash, which is still under investigation.

"It's still early in the investigation, but all indications are the driver may have experienced a medical emergency," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

An RCMP Traffic Analyst attended and his report, along with a mechanical inspection of the car, are pending.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time.
