Maintenance worker finds grenade in Port Alberni yard

Incident happened in 5000 block of Argyle Street in Port Alberni on Wednesday, Feb. 14

A yard maintenance worker got a surprise when he uncovered a grenade while working in a yard in the 5000-block of Argyle Street in Port Alberni on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit was called in around 4 p.m. The worker didn’t touch the grenade, but called the police and the area was quickly secured, according to Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden.

The RCMP explosives unit determined that the grenade was inert and ensured the device was made safe.

“The traditional pin and platform of the grenade was not typical of a military grade device,” Hayden said. No other devices were located. “It appears the grenade was in place at this location for some time. Other specialized units were consulted and made aware of the discovery.”

If anyone has any information how the grenade came to be at this location, they are asked to contact the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
