Lantzville residents are divided on the idea of a lower speed limit along Dickinson Road, though other safety improvements are in the works there.
The District of Lantzville surveyed residents recently about whether they would like to see the speed limit reduced to 30 kilometres per hour on Dickinson Road, and the result of the survey was a fairly even split, with 26 respondents opposed and 22 in favour.
Mayor Mark Swain, who lives just off of Dickinson, said it’s “purely shameful” the speeds that drivers go up and down that road.
“I do refer to it as ‘speedway by the seaside’ all the time, because it is just that,” Swain said.
He said his takeaway from the survey responses was that people want drivers to use common sense and have respect for neighbourhoods.
Coun. Will Geselbracht said although the survey results were split, the comments were helpful. He agreed with a response that suggested the district wait for road upgrades on Dickinson, something that is already part of the 2022-2026 financial plan.
“At that time we can look at walkways or a walkway along Dickinson Road as it’s being replaced. That, in my mind, would be the biggest safety benefit for Dickinson Road…” Geselbracht said. “Here’s our chance to fix up Dickinson to make it biker- and walker-friendly.”
District council received the survey results but did not make any related motion. Coun. Ian Savage said he looks forward to more discussion on the topic at the next community safety standing committee meeting.
“The whole idea is to make sure that we get this road safer,” he said.
