A man was arrested last week for starting a fire in Ladysmith and officials are warning that even small fires can grow to a threatening size.

According to a press release, Ladysmith RCMP were called to the 1000 block of 1st Avenue at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 24. A person had seen a man burning a suitcase, with the flames spreading to the grass close to a tree. People from a nearby business put it out with an extinguisher.

Police attended the area and arrested a 34-year-old man for arson. The Ladysmith resident was released on an undertaking with strict conditions and will appear in provincial court in Duncan.

With summer season and drier conditions, the “small fires can easily grow into large fires and threaten homes and businesses,” the press release said.

Ladysmith RCMP went on to say it has received a number of complaints of suspicious fires around the community. It is continuing to investigate and asks anyone with information on the incidents call 250-245-2215, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they wish to remain anonymous. Anyone witnessing a fire or someone starting a fire is asked to call 911.
