Last week’s inaugural council meeting was mostly about ceremony, as council members affirmed their oaths of office and Mayor Aaron Stone made a speech to mark the start of the term, but there was also some business to attend to.
At the Nov. 1 meeting at the Ladysmith Seniors Centre, the mayor appointed council members to various committees and boards.
Stone will return as Ladysmith’s municipal director on the Cowichan Valley Regional District board, and will also chair the waterfront implementation committee and the Stocking Lake advisory committee.
Coun. Ray Gourlay will sit on the parcel tax review panel, the liquid waste management committee and the Stocking Lake committee.
Coun. Amanda Jacobson will be the first deputy mayor of the term and will chair the committee of the whole until next spring. She will also sit on the official community plan steering committee and the protective services committee.
Coun. Tricia McKay will be the town’s representative with the Ladysmith Downtown Business Association and will also sit on the waterfront committee, the arts and heritage hub steering committee, the protective services committee and the public art task group.
Coun. Duck Paterson is the town’s Festival of Lights representative and will sit on the parcel tax review panel, the parks, recreation and culture committee and the liquid waste management committee.
Coun. Marsh Stevens will serve as the Social Planning Cowichan rep and will be on the parcel tax review panel, waterfront committee, community planning advisory committee and liquid waste management committee.
Coun. Jeff Virtanen will represent the town on both the Vancouver Island Regional Library board and the School District 68 long-range planning advisory committee, and he will also sit on the celebrations committee.
Council meetings are on the first and third Tuesday of every month, except during August, at 7 p.m. unless otherwise scheduled.
