Knife-wielding robber nabbed

NANAIMO – Nanaimo man arrested and convicted of knife-point robbery in Nicol Street area.

A Nanaimo man has been arrested and convicted for a robbery committed in south Nanaimo last week.

The robbery happened in an alley in the 100 block of Nicol Street at about 4:20 a.m. July 4 when a man came up to a woman and asked for her cigarette lighter. When she handed it to him he threw down the lighter and pulled out a knife.

The woman's hand was seriously injured and will require ongoing treatment with specialists when she tried to protect herself by grabbing the knife.

The suspect demanded her purse, money and cellphone. She handed him some cash before she was able to distract him, flee the scene and call for help.

James Scott, 31, of Nanaimo was arrested July 5.

Scott appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and assault and was sentenced to two years in prison.
