Candidates have been out on the campaign trail in recent weeks debating the issues and trying to get across their messages. Now voters will have the final say.
Election day is today, Saturday, Oct. 15.
Voters in the City of Nanaimo and the District of Lantzville will choose their municipality’s mayor and council, voters in the Regional District of Nanaimo’s rural areas will choose their area director and voters from Ladysmith to Lantzville will select a board of school trustees.
Any Canadian citizen who has lived in B.C. for at least six months is eligible to vote in their municipality or rural community.
Where you can vote:
On general voting day, Oct. 15, voting is from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Voting in Nanaimo happens at Beban Park social centre, Chase River Elementary School, the City of Nanaimo service and resource centre, Dover Bay Secondary School, Georgia Avenue Elementary, Nanaimo District Secondary School, Protection Island Fire Hall (10 a.m.-6 p.m.), Randerson Ridge Elementary, Salvation Army Church, Uplands Park Elementary School, Wellington Secondary School and Woodlands Secondary School.
All voting in the District of Lantzville happens from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Oct. 12 and Oct. 15 at Costin Hall.
In the RDN’s Area A and Area C, advance voting Oct. 12 happens only at the RDN’s administration building in Nanaimo between 8 a.m.-8 p.m. On general voting day Oct. 15, residents of Area A can vote at Cranberry Fire Hall or Cedar Elementary School between 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Area C residents can vote at Extension Community Hall or Pleasant Valley Social Centre between 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

What happens once polls close?
After 8 p.m. local time, election officials will begin counting and tallying the ballots. Some City of Nanaimo candidates and their supporters will be gathered at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre that night to await results.
