Investigators still searching for cause of downtown Nanaimo fire

NANAIMO – Investigators continue to follow leads on downtown fire, but no cause found yet.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue investigators are still sifting through the charred remains of the Jean Burns Building for clues to what might have sparked last week's blaze.

Capt. Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue's chief fire prevention officer, said Monday said there was still no clear cause determined for the fire, which gutted the building in downtown Nanaimo at Commercial Street and Terminal Avenue.

"As of right now there's nothing that's jumped out at us," Mond said. "We've got some good ideas. We've got some good leads, but that's it."

Mond also wouldn't comment on whether the fire was considered suspicious other than to say there are rumours floating around that investigators did not consider credible, but nevertheless had to be followed up on.

"We know nothing," Mond said.
