Investigation underway after man allegedly injured in altercation at Nanaimo RCMP detachment

The B.C. RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia of an incident in Nanaimo in which a man sustained serious injuries.

According to a press release, on Friday, April 22, at about 3:30 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP responded to a complaint of an intoxicated man being verbally aggressive to a fellow tenant in a home.

Attending officers arrested the man for uttering threats and transported him to Nanaimo RCMP detachment cells.

Upon arrival, the man reportedly became aggressive and an altercation ensued between the man and one police officer. The man was injured during the altercation, B.C. Emergency Health Services were called and the man was transported to hospital where it was determined he had suffered injuries to his leg and arm.

The matter is now under investigation by the IIO B.C. and no further information will be released by police, the release noted.
