Fire investigators are investigating to determine what sparked a blaze that tore through a home in north Nanaimo early this morning.
Firefighting crews from Nanaimo’s four fire stations responded to the alarm that came in shortly after 2:30 a.m. Monday, July 11.
Tim Doyle, Nanaimo fire chief, said firefighters arrived at the property at the corner of Metral Drive and Malpass Road to a fully involved structure fire.
“They took quick action to knock it down from the outside and, once they had the fire under control, they made entry into the interior to make sure there were no occupants inside,” Doyle said. “They then continued to just mop up the fire.”
The chief praised the fire crews for quickly bringing the fire under control and preventing it from spreading to other structures.
Siding on outbuildings several metres behind the home displayed melted siding and other damage from the heat that radiated from the fire. The house suffered extensive fire damage throughout its structure.
Doyle said no one was at the house when firefighters arrived and Nanaimo Fire Rescue is still trying to ascertain how many people were living there.
The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
“In terms of what’s happening now, the fire is under investigation, so we won’t be able to determine the cause until the investigation’s complete … the good thing is it was knocked down quickly and there was no injuries to the public or any of the firefighters,” Doyle said.
