Home-harbour advantage helps as Nanaimo teams win at dragonboat festival

Blu By U wins mixed platinum A final

Nanaimo dragonboat teams were fastest in their home harbour.

Many local teams fared well at the Nanaimo Save-On-Foods Dragonboat Festival this past weekend, with the Quality Foods Blu By U team winning the fastest final, mixed platinum A. Blu By U finished the race in two minutes, 4.58 seconds, winning by split seconds over Goblin Empire.

Leslie Sutton, one of the festival directors, said organizers and teams were “really happy” with how the weekend went.

“The weather was a little iffy but managed to overall be beautiful out,” she said. “By Sunday afternoon the conditions had calmed down so … there were some good time, there were some Nanaimo teams that won their categories, so there was some good times had and some proud winners.”

In the mixed diamond A final, the Nusa’Lon Dragons won.

The Saggin Dragons took the women’s platinum A final, while the Snappin’ Dragons were winners in diamond A.

Deep Cover Perfect Catch won the women’s jade A final and the Fairway Gorge Vic Vixens finished first in the women’s gold A final. The BPF Mid Island Masters won the mixed jade A final. Abreast with Fort-itude was the winner of the breast cancer survivors’ B final.

The Red Solo Cups won the mixed platinum B final, with the Fairway Gorge Blazing Paddles winning in mixed diamond B. Stroke the Dragon won the women’s platinum B final and the Cultus Lake Dragon Flyers won women’s diamond B.

Other winning teams included the Fairway Gorge Gorge-Us Gals, Phoenix Rising, the Fairway Gorge Dragon Flyers and the Fairway Gorge MS Warriors.
