The Nanaimo Community Archives want to hear about renovation projects around town for the third annual Heritage Building Renovation Awards.

As in previous years, no project is too small to be a candidate for the awards, which recognize any exterior renovation that enhances and retains the overall heritage character of a home, but this year Nanaimo Community Archives is broadening the competition with a new category. In fact, the title of the awards, formerly Heritage House Renovation Awards, has even changed to reflect the addition.

“We thought we’d expand it a bit,” said Christine Meutzner, Nanaimo Community Archives manager. “The big thing is that we’re now adding commercial projects.”

To enter, participants need to submit a minimum of three photographs and a short description of the project. Projects must have been completed in 2022 and be within the Nanaimo city limits, but buildings do not need to be on the City of Nanaimo’s heritage register to qualify and participants don’t have to be the property owners.

“You can be a renter of a commercial space and maybe you did something beautiful or the owner or whoever did it,” Meutzner said. “We’re trying to promote that it’s just as valuable.”

Deadline for submissions is May 15.

For more information or to submit an entry for the awards contact the archives at nanaimoarchives@gmail.com.
