A 20-hectare fire is burning on Cameron Bluffs, across from Cameron Lake on Highway 4 east of Port Alberni.
The fire is listed as out of control by the BC Wildfire Service, which means it is continuing to spread and is not responding to suppression efforts. People from as far away as Comox have reported seeing smoke from the Cameron Bluffs blaze.
The fire was first reported late Saturday, June 3 to the Coastal Fire Centre and is suspected to be human caused, although no further information was provided. The fire is approximately 14 kilometres east of Port Alberni, but is not within Mount Arrowsmith Regional Park.
Two helicopters with water buckets have been attacking the fire along with two initial attack crews (eight firefighters), according to the Coastal Fire Centre.
Boaters on Cameron Lake are being asked to stay away from helicopter bucketing dip sites.
DriveBC posted on the weekend asking people to refrain from stopping on Highway 4 “to spectate the fire.” The fire was not impacting the highway as of Monday morning.
