Health authority recognized as a top employer

The Vancouver Island Health Authority has been named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for the fourth year in a row.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for the fourth year in a row.

Mediacorp Canada Inc., a publishing company that manages the annual contest, recognized the health authority once again for its initiatives to attract and retain skilled staff.

The health authority employs more than 18,000 people. Initiatives include: a mentorship program for new graduates entering the field of nursing; excellent salary and benefits programs; ongoing support for staff training and skills development with scholarships and tuition subsidies; encouraging staff to reduce their carbon footprints by offering transit subsidies, onsite shower facilities and a carpool sign-up system; and leadership development for current and aspiring leaders.

“Attracting and retaining a strong work force means we can provide the best care possible to patients and meet the increasing demands on our system,” said Howard Waldner, CEO, in a press release.
