More than 1.6 million singles in B.C. this Valentine’s Day

For those flying solo on the dreaded day of love, take solace in knowing you aren’t alone. Statistics Canada data from 2016 show more than 12 million single Canadians and more than 1.6 million single British Columbians.

In fact, nearly half of the 3.8 million people over 15-years-old in B.C. are single, and 28.8 per cent of homes in B.C. are occupied by only one person.

Would you rather go out on Valentine’s Day or stay home with your dog?

More than a few people would rather stay at home with their cat or dog than go out on a date for Valentine’s Day, according to a new poll.

A survey conducted by Rover, a Seattle-based dog-walking and pet-sitting service, suggests 49 per cent of British Columbians would prefer to spend Feb. 14 at home with their pet, instead of going out with friends or on a hot date.

Love is in the air, but beware of scammers this Valentine’s Day

Thanks to social media, it’s easier than ever for con artists to target those looking for love on Valentine’s Day.

The Better Business Bureau is offering tips so your quest for romance doesn’t blind you to the realities of scams.

Romance scams were behind more than $1 billion in losses in Canada and the U.S. between 2015 and 2018, the bureau said.

Victoria voted ‘most romantic city’ in Canada

For the seventh year in a row, Amazon named Victoria as the most romantic city in Canada, followed by LaSalle, Que. and Fort McMurray, Alta. Other B.C. cities that made the list were North Vancouver (4th) Kelowna (7th), Courtenay (9th), Vancouver (15th), Langley (16th) and Port Coquitlam (20th).

The data looks at the purchases of romantic comedies, jewellery, sexual wellness products, relationship books and romance novels.

Vancouver Island couple makes most of snow, sleeps in backyard igloo

This week’s snow storm may be causing some major headaches for those commuting, but Paul Lewis and Julie Gervais couldn’t be more excited about it.

The Vancouver Island couple, who live in Colwood, was full of laughs after spending Monday night in their homemade backyard igloo, taking advantage of the record snowfall.

After wandering down to a closed liquor store for a bottle of wine, the couple took a side trip to Lewis’s moms house, coming back with a few bottles and a shovel – everything needed to build a shelter in the snow.

Would you date my son? Mother causes concern on U.S. campus

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and at Towson University in Maryland a mother has trying so hard to find a date for her son that police are concerned.

The Baltimore Sun reports that a woman in her 50s wearing a multicolored scarf approached students in two campus buildings last week, showing them a picture on her cellphone and asking if they would date her son.

After receiving multiple complaints from the mother’s picks, campus police issued an ‘incident advisory.’
