The driver of a City of Nanaimo garbage truck reportedly suffered minor injuries after the vehicle flipped on its side in north Nanaimo Wednesday.

The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. when, according to witnesses, the truck was leaving Dover Bay Secondary School and turning right onto McGirr Road when it rolled onto its side.

The driver climbed out a back window of the truck’s cab and had minor scrapes. He was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to be examined for injuries as firefighters stood by while police and city public works investigated the crash scene.

Both traffic lanes on McGirr Road remained blocked for about one hour until two large tow trucks were brought on to the site to right the vehicle.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
