An apparent lack of fuel foiled a vehicle thief in Nanaimo this morning.

According to Nanaimo RCMP Staff Sgt. Sarah Mattes, an off-duty officer was driving on Estevan Road on Monday, May 29, and spotted a Ford pickup truck come to a stop and its driver get out and walk away from the vehicle. The stolen pickup, according to officers on scene, appeared to have run out of fuel and was left in a narrow section of Estevan Road near a bus stop behind Terminal Park Mall, which left insufficient room for vehicles to pass, so police had to close the section of road until it could be towed away.

Mattes said a suspect was taken into custody later that morning.
